‘The zazen of even one person at one moment imperceptibly accords with all things and fully resonates through all time. Thus in the past, future and present of the limitless universe, this zazen carries on the Buddha’s teaching endlessly. Each moment of zazen is equally wholeness of practice, equally wholeness of realization.’ (Shobogenzo Bendowa)
I think this is a hard proposition for us to accept – my reaction used to be, ‘well I can’t really be sitting zazen, because it does not appear that way to me’ – but the key word here is ‘imperceptibly’. These days I trust that Dogen knows what he is talking about, and that this is indeed so, and sometimes allowing that response brings about a great ease.
