‘A visiting monk: Is there any merit in doing zazen?
Bankei: You shouldn’t have a dislike for doing zazen, just as you shouldn’t avoid chanting sutras, bowing, or anything else of that kind. Tokusan wielded a staff. Rinzai shouted Khat! Gutei held up one finger. Bodhidharma sat facing a wall. Each was different, and yet all were measures used in response to an occasion present at a certain time. They were the expedient means of good and able masters. Intrinsically, there is no definitively established Dharma. If you try to give the Dharma a fixed interpretation, you merely blind your own eye. Just believe what I tell you with an open heart, and stay with what you were born with.’ (The Unborn)
