So, Which Is It?

In reading through Dogen’s Genjo Koan, Three Commentaries end to end for my class, I was struck by a similar phrase that popped up in two places. It reminded me of the post about mosquitoes from a few years ago – one of the quotes for which actually came from the same book.

‘To abide at ease in steadfast non-thinking is the bull’s-eye of zazen.’ – Nishiari Bokusan.

‘I always say that in zazen, we never hit the bull’s-eye. Actually, while we are sitting, if we think, “Wow! My zazen is very good,” we are just thinking. We are already slipping out of zazen.’ – Kosho Uchiyama.
