‘Even though these ideas are just flickers of electricity in our brains, we can let them rule our lives. But we do have the power to break free from them. We can start to do this by asking ourselves what we really know. Are our thoughts really true?
Asking this may start out scary, but it can get fun. It starts with stories about how we feel, about what we can do, about what others think, but it can go deeper and deeper. Where is the point where we end and the universe begins? Is it really true that we end at our skin? Is it really true that I know who or what I am? Is it really true that there is something to defend?
When we change our thoughts, our feelings get less scary. We can choose new words and new actions, and that means our character can change too. We are not in charge of how quickly our thoughts change—sometimes it’s fast, and sometimes it’s slow—but we are responsible for questioning them. That’s how things begin to shift, and the opportunity to pivot arrives.’
