Shundo David Haye – Zen Priest

Guishan asked Yangshan, “How do you understand inconceivable, clear, bright mind?”
Yangshan said, “Mountains, rivers, the great earth, the sun, the moon, and the stars.”?
Guishan said, “You only understand things.”
Yangshan said, “Master, what did you just ask me?”
Guishan said, “How do you understand inconceivable, clear, bright mind?”
Yangshan said, “Can you call that ‘things’?”
Guishan said, “That’s it; that’s it!” (Shinji Shobogenzo)

Again, I look at the two translations I have available and am not really satisfied with either, particularly when it comes to Guishan’s responses. The other translation has the first as, “You have only got ‘that,’” the second as, “Can we call it ‘this’?” In any case, the thing to understand is that the inconceivable is present as things, and things are present as the inconceivable. At least, that is how I understand it.
