Teachings

This week I have a new teaching event, at a location I haven’t taught at before, the SF Dharma Collective; on Thursday evening I will be offering zazen, speaking about Suzuki Roshi and Dogen, and reflecting on my years of practice at Zen Center. The event is both in-person and online, so I hope you will attend if you can.

I am, at the same time, trying to gather my thoughts for the half-day study workshop on the Shodoka for Zen Center, which will be on Saturday 14th. As soon as that finishes, I will be driving over the bridge to officiate a wedding, one of three I have in the books for this month. All in all, I am trying to stay on top of a number of loose ends right now.

Our weather systems seem somewhat fragile at the moment. The forecast for last weekend was for fine and sunny weather, so I was happy to be spending a lot of it outside: I had shortish rides on Friday and Saturday mornings, and roams each afternoon. These were the kinds of afternoons where we chose to walk on the shady side, and sit in the shade more often than not. Both were well attended, and people did well to navigate the climbs that are pretty inevitable in the city. On Friday we roamed around the hillside of Glen Park, exploring all the dirt roads; on Saturday, from Rincon Hill, pretty invisble under the tall buildings that have sprung up in the neighbourhood, to Telegraph Hill, which still stands tall.

It was nice to feel physically tired out at the end of each day. I still wanted to get a longer ride in on Sunday morning, this time to Ocean Beach (avoiding the triathletes on the north side of the city) and San Bruno Mountain, which I don’t think I have ridden to the top of this year. As happened last week, it was a grey morning, not quite as damp, but with a fearsome wind blowing in the upper reaches of the mountain.
