Wedding Season

Between last week’s rain and an atmospheric river that is threatening to skirt the region this weekend, we have had a few days of perfect October weather. Having brought out winter boots and long trousers, it was back to thin shirts and shorts again. It seems nature is having a last flourish in the sun: pelicans, butterflies, hummingbirds all out and about. In the early morning I have even heard the coyote family calling a couple of times.

I don’t know why I have so many weddings this month, but the extra work very welcome as we pay the bills for our own nuptials.

Early on Sunday, with a mist hanging over North Beach, I picked up a car and drove down the peninsula to Hakone Gardens. It was certainly an apt spot to wear my robes; I am really a little surprised that I have not visited in my years here. The morning sun illuminated the autumn foliage beautifully; the young couple were very present and both quite moved during the ceremony. As I have been saying, it is always amazing to have a front row seat to this kind of emotional authenticity.

The couple and I stood on the bridge for the ceremony.

Tuesday’s ceremony was on a hillside in Pacifica, surrounded by flowers – arranged for the event, and in greenhouses and sheds. I had driven through fog in Daly City, so I was worried about the venue, but it was clear in the lee of the hills, overlooking the shining ocean. This young couple had roped in their friends to pull off the event, and it was very sweetly done.

I have one more, at City Hall on Friday, and that may be it for the season.
