On Wednesday afternoon last week, I went for an afternoon bike ride after a busy few hours. It was grey, I went over Twin Peaks, and when I got home I felt I had tweaked my lower back, without any notion of how I had done it.
The next day we had an atmospheric river just in time for my morning commute. I donned all my waterproofs and made it into work without getting too soaked, though I always find it stressful, and work at the moment is a lot of video editing that doesn’t involve much moving.
That rain moved on, and the Friday morning, when I also got a ride in, the moisture was lingering, but also evaporating in the sun. I didn’t rest as I usually do after a ride, but turned around to go and meet a friend who was in town, and then run errands. I felt incredibly tired at the end of all that, and crashed out early in the evening.
People had worried about the forecast for the Saturday roam. In the end it was perfectly nice weather for hiking, but also grey. I wasa glad I had enough energy for the hilly route.
Sunday there was a forecast of showers. As I got ready to ride, it looked okay, but as I got to the end of the street, I was getting drizzled on and there was a rainbow stretching away over Russian Hill. I chased it down to the water, the drizzle moved on, and I got about an hour of riding in – I just wished I had worn my overshoes. After lunch we went over to Green Gulch where there was a jukai with Zenju Osho and four of her students, including Terrye from Wilbur.
Monday was another day when the rain came and went – I ended up taking the bus south of Market to work on setting up an event, another day of tiring myself out physically – followed by another couple of days of editing. By the end of Thursday my back was very stiff again.
Friday was Ruth’s birthday; it was bright and sunny, very different to last year. We went back to Kabuki, where we had gone two years ago (this time, helped out by a kind donation of a gift voucher from one of the readers of this blog – deep bows, you know who you are!). My practioner skillfully worked around my sore spots, and I felt a lot better afterwards, though it is still painful to move in certain ways. I have no roams this weekend, and even though riding does not seem hard with my sore back, I will limit it to Sunday, and hope to make up for it next week with the holidays.
