Suzuki Roshi

‘It is not because you practice zazen that you obtain enlightenment. The practice just to attain enlightenment does not work. It is exactly the same to enjoy hot spring and sitting cross-legged position every morning and evening, you know. And in one or two months, after one or two months, he may say, “I studied Zen for two months, or for sixty days, but nothing happened to me!” [Laughter]. i think that kind will go back to San Francisco! This kind of Zen does not work. It means nothing. If you don’t practice it, it with some spirit, it is not Zen.’ (from the Suzuki Roshi Archive)
