‘Buddhas and ancestors of old were as we; we in the future shall be buddhas and ancestors. Revering buddhas and ancestors, we are one buddha and one ancestor; awakening bodhi-mind, we are one bodhi-mind. Because they extend their compassion to us freely and without limit, we are able to attain buddhahood and let go of the attainment.’ (Eihei Koso Hotsuganmon)

I changed a setting in WordPress, so now it shows me what I have posted on the same date in years gone by. This one is from the beginnings of the blog, and I added quite an extensive commentary at that time.

As it happens, I was also just looking at the transcript of the talk I gave at Tassajara a couple of summers ago (which I might post on Patreon once I clean up the odd weird rendering), which touches on themes I also want to address in my talk at City Center on the 1st, and where I quote this.

As something that we chant more than we read, it’s good to linger over the words sometimes.
