‘In 1965 The Three Pillars of Zen by Philip Kapleau was published. It’s all about big enlightenment experiences. Suzuki didn’t speak out against the book, but it was apparent that he didn’t think too much of it. Suzuki showed us, through example, that Zen was about something much deeper than having a big experience.
Zen practice is about taking care of our lives, helping others, and being open to whatever comes up. When we accommodate ourselves to others, the ego self is not so important. This change happens on its own, because our small self is sustained through self-centeredness and self involvement.’ (Nothing Holy About It)
