(Wisdom of the Zen Masters)
This was the first version I ever read of Huineng’s story. I have posted some of these pages before; I very much enjoyed the faces and expressions of the characters in the stories, which helped make them human and accessible as I was starting out my practice.
If you didn’t know, this is the origin of the tradition of having the dharma transmission ceremony at midnight. I did receive robe and bowl at my midnight ceremony, but I confess to being a little sad that nobody explained the Diamond Sutra to me at that time.
