The Best Time Of The Year

At the time of writing, the peace has not yet been disturbed by the Blue Angels flying low and loud overhead, though it is only a matter of time. One consequence for this year is that we realised that the Angel Island day out scheduled for Sunday would likely be very crowded and noisy, so we postponed that until next month. Which means that I can probably go and watch the big Italian parade in North Beach instead.

Apart from that, October has lived up to its billing as a prime month to be in the city. We have had generally warm temperatures, with an edge of fog bringing an autumnal chill to the mornings.

Up until Wednesday, I was still very much recovering physically. My back was stiff and sore; on Friday morning, with a thick fog hanging over the city, I decided to rest rather than ride, though I went out for the roam later (dodging the festival in the park), where the weather was ideal for a hike. On Saturday I found that the farmers’ market had moved into a new season in the few weeks since I have been able to go along: now it is persimmons and pomegranates, winter squash and root vegetables.

It has been a normal week of teachings so far, back on seat with the Monday group and Dogen study, sitting on Tuesday morning and Wednesday at noon, and meeting people for conversations. I have mostly caught up on admin, and all the details have been ironed out for the first of the weddings, this Saturday.

A quick ride on Sunday morning.
On the dunes south of Great Highway as it warmed up on Sunday’s roam.
Misty sunrise on Wednesday.
The foghorns on the bridge were going most of the day, despite abundant sun elsewhere.
