First Rains

It seems hard to remember now, but a week ago we had our first autumnal rains. It was, as usual, the tail end of a storm rolling in from the Pacific, and in the end, there was very little rain. On Wednesday it threatened most of the day; on Thursday the roads were damp for my morning commute, and there were showers during the day, but I didn’t get wet on the way home either. Still, all my rain gear got an airing, and it was the final reminder that I needed to clean my bikes.

I managed to do that on Sunday. On Friday and Saturday we roamed in warm sunshine – no traces of the wet weather the next day. Watching the storms passing through the UK, I could only feel grateful that we have such a defined rainy season, and while I am somewhat pessimistic about the upcoming super El Niño year, I am making the most of the bright warm afternoons before our clocks go back.

For various reasons, several of my Monday meetings aren’t happening, so after the Suzuki Roshi group in the morning, and with Ruth at home feeling congested, I did some work around the house that really needed doing before we head off to London next week (wanting things to be nice for the pet-sitter). I did a lot of sweeping out the back of the house and across the basement, which left my back feeling a bit stiff. I had been feeling pretty much back to full strength on my bike rides over the weekend, so I have to remember to take it a little easier these days.

This weekend is the third of my October Saturday weddings, and the furthest yet, down in Carmel Highlands. We will stay overnight in Pacific Grove, which should be lovely, though of course cuts into our trip preparation.
