‘I came to this mountain
Looking for enlightenment.
There was no enlightenment on the mountain.
Whether laughing or crying
All I hear is an echo
From the other side of the mountain’

This poem dates from 1939, and is in the collection Endless Vow. Although he trained in Japan, Soen had a big influence on the spread of zen in America.
