Katherine Thanas

‘The heart is a mysterious organ. It doesn’t just pump blood. I don’t think we know how to open our heart to ourselves. Sometimes we feel that we open it to others. But, it just opens. We don’t do it. Just as we don’t do zazen. The more zazen you do, the more you realized that you don’t do zazen.’ (Sitting Under The Bodhi Tree)

I came across Katherine Thanas a few times at Zen Center – more at Tassajara than at City Center, as I recall. We had a laugh one time when she could not remember my name, and she said, “well, it’s getting harder for me to tell all you tall, skinny, white guys with shaved heads apart.”
